Tobacco contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive psychoactive drug. When tobacco is smoked, nicotine causes physical and psychological dependency.Tobacco use has predominantly negative effects on human health.
Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and several cancers (particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth, bladder cancer, and pancreatic cancer). It also causes peripheral arterial disease and high blood pressure.
The Republic of Armenia acceded to the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, after which the RA Law on restrictions on the sale, consumption and use of tobacco was adopted, which prohibits smoking in public transport, health care, education and cultural facilities.
